Politecnico di Milano (PoliMi/IIT)

About PoliMi:

The Politecnico di Milano (acronym PoliMI ) is an Italian university institute of a scientific and technological nature, founded in Milan in 1863. The fields of study and research include the three macro-areas of engineering , architecture and design.

The Polytechnic, originally called [5] "Royal Higher Technical Institute", was founded on 29 November 1863 on the initiative of the Society for the encouragement of arts and crafts. Its first seat was in the Senate building , once a Swiss college in the city; the mathematician Francesco Brioschi was appointed to guide him. Initially it only offered an engineering course. The local administrations (Municipality and Province of Milan), the chamber of commerce, the Cassa di Risparmio of the Lombard Provinces, cultural associations and entrepreneurs contributed to the foundation.

In 1865 an architecture course was activated for the first time, while in 1866 the seat was moved to "Palazzo della Canonica" in Piazza Cavour. Subsequently, in 1913, an agreement was stipulated between the State, the Municipality and the Milan Chamber of Commerce, with the help of the Cassa di Risparmio delle Provincie Lombarde , to decentralize and merge in a single place the higher education institutions scattered around the city. The choice of location fell on the peripheral area of the "Double Cascine", which later became Città Studi.

In 1927 the first stone of the new complex was laid: the new pole in Piazza Leonardo Da Vinci in Città Studi became the seat of the university, at the time called the "Regio Politecnico di Milano". A few years later, in 1933, the Polytechnic was divided into two distinct faculties: engineering and architecture.

In 1953 he inaugurated the first computer center in continental Europe , thanks to the impulse of Gino Cassinis and Ercole Bottani. In 1964 the new office in via Bonardi was built for the Faculty of Architecture. In 1977 the Sirio satellite was put into orbit , developed by the Polytechnic in collaboration with Telespazio, the Aerospace Industrial Company and Telettra.

In 1989 the new offices were inaugurated in the Milanese district of Bovisa and in the cities of Como and Lecco ; the "Network Polytechnic" strategy was launched which saw the University open offices in Cremona (1991), Mantua (1994) and Piacenza (1997). The Faculty of Design was born in 2000, later a school of design, which had already existed since 1993 as an articulation of the degree course in architecture.

In 2002 the "Politecnico di Milano Foundation" was created. Among the main objectives is the involvement of companies and public structures in the university. In 2004, the Alta Scuola Politecnica was founded in collaboration with the Polytechnic of Turin .
